Log #0003: Bring On The Birds

A Surprise On The Deck

The Surprise On My Deck

I have a robin's nest on my deck.

There's a very small deck at my front door, about 7x7 ft. with a railing all round. In the far corner, I have an old silk ficus tree about 6 ft. tall that I didn't have room for inside. To keep it from falling over with every gust of wind, I tied it to the railing with a piece of clothesline.

I noticed one of the robins seemed to be in there a lot lately. Every time I walked by it startled me badly by suddenly erupting from the leaves and flying over my head to the edge of the yard. Since I'm usually deep in thought as I putter about, it managed to make me jump and yelp every single time. So I finally took a closer look, and damned if there isn't a nice, sturdy nest sitting on the railing amongst the fake foliage. With three small blue eggs to boot. Pretty cool.

Of course, I feel bad now everytime I have to go outside. I start apologizing to the damned bird (who, let us not forget, deliberately CHOSE to nest by my front door). Also, I'm worrying a little about it every time it gets windy and I keep peeking out the window to make sure it's all right. And what about predators? It isn't as if this nest is out of anyone's reach. What if the outdoor cats in the area find it?

But I'm still really pleased. I've never had the opportunity to observe this sort of thing up close before, it should be interesting. I wonder if the baby birds will get used to my presence?

Because they hatched the other day, you see. One day there were three blue eggs; the next day there were two strange little creatures and one blue egg.

The day after that, three strange little creatures and no blue eggs.

I assume they will start looking like little birds soon instead of alien lizard creatures. I will keep updating as they grow.
